THE COLOURFUL JOURNEY

Hello dear bloggers. I am back after some time. What comes to my mind rite now, is that “Oh My God, we are almost finishing”. Times has flied so fast that even without me realizing that we are going into week 14 which is going to be the last semester for us Cohort 4. I would like to thank all my friends for all your support through out the hard times that I have faced throughout my journey. Special thanks to Ms. Ng and my fellow group (Group 4) mates for understanding my situation for the past few weeks that I’m going through. Well, now I’m here to share the last bits and pieces of our journey through this class. I would describe this journey as  “unbelievable and wonderful”. This is because I have learnt many things that I never knew and thought of using for my pupils. On the other hand, I’m also describing it as wonderful because I enjoyed every moment of my technology class from day one. Although there were ups and downs but I would sincerely say that I have learnt a lot and now I’m kind of a techno savvy person. I can personally see the difference. I too realized the journey does not have an end. This is mainly because every day we have new things coming up; therefore we have to update ourselves in order to keep up with the standards. I too would like to apologize if there any mistakes that I have done knowingly or unknowingly. Thanks you sooo much. It was indeed a great journey that we were brought to.

E-Book Before and After

Hi, well this weeks’ task is on the transformation of e-book. I really find it important to create a e-book that suits the targeted level of kids. I have used my e-book that i had designed long ago (hehe initial years of my degree 🙂 ) Generally, i have improved on the below:

(i) font size

I have enlarged the font size. I have made it a little bigger so that my pupils will not find it difficult or need not strain their eyes to read the e-book. Moreover i find that when the sentences are big, pupils interest in reading will be maintained.

(ii) image size

I have enlarged the pictures so that pupils can clearly seen the content inside the image. Moreover when the pictures are big and clear, pupils indirectly get motivated to continue reading as they would be curious to see the following picture.

(iii) made it more interactive

I have designed the e-book more interactive so that pupils will get involved in the reading. Besides that, pupils to will be able to remember what they learn better.

(iv) change the layout

I have changed the layout and designed it in such away that the story and the sound of the animals are separated. This is mainly because pupils will be easily able to different shade between the sounds of the animals and the story.

Personalized Learning With BuiLD YouR WiLD SeLF

Hiiiii folks, I am back this week to blog on “Personalized Learning” (PL). According to Wikipedia, PL is the tailoring of pedagogy, curriculum and learning support to meet the needs and aspirations of an individual learner. Hence, I can say that PL puts the needs of students FIRST as it honors each student as an individual learner who has their own style of learning. Therefore, I feel PL should be applied in the classroom because we as teachers have to respect and recognizes that each child is unique.

Now, I am going to share a lesson that I have designed for PL using the software “With BuiLD YouR WiLD SeLF”. This software is user friendly and it gives pupils the opportunity to create themselves using the items in the software.

Topic: My Self

Target Learners: Year 2

Lesson Objective: By end of the lesson, pupils will be able to create a new

                                avatar and intoduce it to the class.

Procedure:

1. Teachers gets pupils to recall the body parts.

2. Teacher pre-teaches and gets pupils to identify the body parts as the

     teacher mentions.

3. Teacher emphasizes on the spelling of each body part.

4. Teacher distributes a task sheet and gets pupils to match between the

     pictures and the word of each body part.

5. Teacher along with the pupils discuss the answers.

6. Teacher gets pupils to work in groups of 5

7. Teacher tells them that they are going to create their own groups avatar

     with a new identity and name.

8. Teachers introduces pupils to the software and teaches them how to use it.

9. Teacher gets pupils to work on the task. Teachers gives them around 10

     minutes to complete their task.

10. Teacher gets the pupils to present their avatar that each group created.

11. Teacher prints out each groups avatar and gets them to paste on the walls.

LEARNING WITH FULL OF FUN

Children love to play games. Naturally, incorporating games into your classroom routines will be a popular move. Game playing can improve the way our students learn, engage with the content of a lesson, and provide learning beyond the curriculum. “Who wants to be a Millionaire” game is really full of fun and joy. Even, we adults get so excited when it comes to games. So, can you imagine the young kids? I am extremely positive that these young kids will be extremely happy to play such games in class as it may be the first time that these kids are participating in this game personally. I really feel that this game must be used in the classroom as games force students to think in new and creative ways. Many students happily engage in games because the pressure is not on them to write. Providing students with a vehicle to experience success or winning helps to engage them in other classroom activities. Students who are shy often find a new way of communicating with their peers in game play. Choosing the right games is important. As for me, I feel that this game is appropriate but we as teachers have to adapt it in a way that suits the level of pupils that we have. The process of adapting this game to suit our pupils is kind of challenging. Initially, we had to choose a suitable topic for the game. Once we came up with the topic, we came out with the set of questions. During this stage, we had to consider the pupils level of proficiency, knowledge and so on. After that, we had to choose a fascinating background and colour so that pupils do not feel bored looking at it. I never thought that this game can be carried out in class until we designed it. Only after that, I could see how this game could be carried out in a class. It is sad, that my practical is over and I can’t use this game with my kids. I am sure I will use this game in the future. This lesson has really thought me on how to adapt and manipulate games that can be used in our classrooms. Next, I have learned to be more critical and judgmental as we needed to comment on each group’s weakness and also their strengths. I feel as teachers to be we need to be critical and judgmental so that we can guide our pupils correctly.

MY LESSON USING FARMVILLE

Hi everyone I am back again this week with something different. Well this blog is basically going to be about a lesson designed using the online game available in Facebook which is?????? FarmVille. I guess most of you already know what this game is all about. Dont you??? This game allows the players to create their own mini farms complete with trees, fruits,vegetables, flowers, animals and so on.Upon beginning a farm, the player first creates a customizabloue avatar which may be changed at any point. Basically i choose this game because I really find it suitable for lower primary ids and even upper primary depending on the way one manipulates it. In adddition, pupils will be indirectly able to learn the names vegetables, flowers, animals and so on as it is all part of the crops in the game. On the other hand, this game is easy to play and it is colourful as well. So, im sure pupils will really enjoy playing and learning through FarmVille.

Several lesson can be designed from FarmVille. So, now i am going to introduce you to one simple lesson that can be carried out to teach pupils on the topic fruits using FarmVille as below:

Targeted learners: Year 2 (high proficiency)

Language focus: Nouns (Type of fruits: white grapes, yellow melon, elderberries, square melon, 

                                       raspberries)

Topic: Fruits and Vegetables

Focused Skills: Speaking

Integrated Skills: Listening, Reading and Writing

Language objective: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

a) name the fruits

b) spell the names of fruits

 

Lesson

Set Induction and Pre teaching

1. Teacher carries out an oral discussion with pupils on fruits

2. Teacher shows pupils the picture of FarmVille and asks whether pupils have been to a fruit

plantation farm before. (Have you seen a plantation? Have you been there? Does it look

similar to the one shown? and many other questions)

3. Teacher elicits responses from pupils.

4. Teacher corrects and provides feedback when necessary.

5. Teacher gets pupils to name fruits that they know.

6. Teacher gets them to spell it out

7. Teacher corrects and provides feedback when necessary.

 

Teaching Stage

1. Teacher tells the class that they are going to visit a Farm

2. Teacher introduces pupils to FarmVille.

3. Teacher introduces pupils to the fruits in the farm in a story version.

Eg; Class, imagine that now we are all visiting a farm. There are many fruit in the farm.

The farmer is going to introduces us to the fruits that he has. This is raspberry. and the

story goes on like that

4. Teacher spells the raspberry letter by letter.

5. Teacher writes the word raspberry on the white board.

6. Teacher gets pupils to read the spelling as a class.

7. Teacher continues to tell the story and introduce pupils to the other four fruits one by one.

8. Procedure 4 to 6 is repeated after the teacher introduces pupils to a new fruit.

Production Stage:

1. Teacher gets pupils to work in groups.

2. Teacher tells them that they are going to play a game and the game is that they have to help

the farmer plant the number of a particular fruits that is required. (eg; 10 raspberries)

3. Teacher logs in to FarmVille and introduces the pupils to this game.

4. Teacher explains to pupils on how to choose the fruit that the farmer wants them to plant and

so on.

5. Teachers gets a representative from each group one by one to come in front and plant the fruit

that the teachers tells.

6. Teacher facilitates when necessary.

7 Procedure 5 to 6 is continued after the representative has planted the fruit required.

Closure

Teacher sums up the lesson by getting pupils to recall the spelling of the fruits they were introduced to.

THUMBSS UP TO DOMO ANIMATE

Hiii everyone. Welcome back to “My Technology Zone”. Hope all of you are doing fine. Before I start I would like to wish you all a Happy Chinese New Year and Happy Holidays. Letsss enjoy to the max before we get back to work. Just to recall, in the previous ICT lecture we had a discussion, on how to promote conceptual understanding among pupils while getting them to engage in the activities carried out. To do this, in groups we combined the photographs that we brought along and designed it into two activities. Basically our theme for the lesson was animals and we taught them on the spellings. So, overall, my group members and I feel that this activity enables pupils to reflect on what they have learnt.

Well, now I am going to share with you the experience of using one of the tools that will be useful for our third assignment. I guess by now, you all know what tool that I am planning to share with you all….Guess what??? Hmmm it is the Domoanimate. clip_image005   I will be introducing this software as below:

1. What is Domoanimate?

Domoanimate is similar to GoAnimate. It is a fun and easy to use online animation program that can be used with upper primary pupils to college student and so on. It operates within the secured, private environment where anyone and everyone can create animations and interact. This application requires the users to sign up for an account, but a teacher could easily create an account for students to use.

2. The functions of Domoanimate?

This tool makes animation easy. It has various backgrounds, props and characters to create an animation masterpiece. Besides that, we too can add in objects and music for their scenes. Then add speech bubbles and movements to your characters and objects. This tool enables us to create the video according to the setting and environment that we want. We too can add more scenes and special effects to finish the story. Once an animated story is complete, it can be shared via social networking sites, embedded in a website, or share with a URL that is provided.

3. The limitations of the tool?

– The animation is difficult to do, and will take quite a bit of time to master

– A teacher has little time to commit to understanding new software such as this

– Students will be confused unless the format is simplified for lower grades

– You cannot post the animations to YouTube as of yet

– You are limited to using only music available at Domo Animate

4. The strength of this tool?

– Access to all Students, Parents & Educators, FREE

– There are pre-made screens for new users to easily upload pictures and create animations

– The site monitors and removes inappropriate animation

– The site identifies and scrambles inappropriate language used in animation creations

5. When can this tool be used?

This tool can be used in many ways. As for example, the teacher can use the story created the teach pupils the targeted language and so on. In addition, the teacher can also use this tool to present story to pupils in an interesting manner instead of big book and so on.

6. The user friendliness from the teacher point of view?

This toll is user friendly. It can create a lesson animation to jumpstart students’ interest in a particular subject. In addition, the ability to communicate with others and get feedback will inspire and affirm students’ efforts

7. The tool is suitable for which standard?

This tool is definitely suitable for all ages depending on how the teacher plans to use this toll. But if the teacher wants the pupils to create their own version of story then this tool is suitable for upper primary level of pupils.

INTEGRATION OF TPACK IN MY LESSON.

Hi, folks…. I am back now to blog for the third week. Well this week, we had a discussion on TPACK. From my understanding, TPACK stands for T : Technological; P : Pedagogical; C : Content; K : Knowledge. TPACK attempts to capture some of the essential qualities of knowledge required by teachers for technology integration in their teaching, while addressing the complex, multifaceted and situated nature of teacher knowledge.

Since, I have briefly described  TPACK  based on my understanding, now I would like to relate TPACK to one of my lesson that I carried out during my teaching practice.

This is a speaking lesson designed for my Year 5 pupils of high proficiency. The topic of my lesson is “Invention”. The language focus is “Wh- Questions”.

Technology

In this lesson, I used technology to design this lesson. In this lesson, I used PowerPoint slides, laptop and speakers. In the set induction stage, I showed my pupils a short video and picture.

In the presentation stage, I used PowerPoint slides to introduce my pupils to the language focus which is Wh-Questions.

In the practice stage, I carried out a “Question for Answer” game. During this stage, I used my laptop and speakers to carry out the game. I divided my pupils into two groups and distributed two different types of task sheet to each group.  I played the song and stopped it when necessary.

Pedagogy

Basically I integrated the co-operative learning theory to carry out my lesson. Pupils were asked to work in groups and design their groups information while describing their invention based on the “Wh-Questions”. In addition, pupils to played the game “Question for Answer” in groups. As a teacher I played my role by evaluating my pupils responses and corrected them when necessary.

Content

Well the content of the lesson was on the various inventions throughout the years. On the other hand, I emphasized on the techniques on how to ask questions in a grammatically correct manner as well. 

 

How content knowledge is taught via pedagogical knowledge?

Basically, my content of lesson was on “Wh-Questions”. Therefore, I taught them through modeling. I introduced pupils to the various Wh-Questions that they could form in a proper manner in order for them to ask Questions. The example, I gave them did really help them during the practice stage whereby the pupils needed to construct the Wh-Questions. This even helped the weaker pupils as they could follow the example and use the example as a guide for them to also used co-operative learning strategy whereby pupils worked in two big group. When pupils work in groups, they indirectly tend to learn from one another as well. So, this is another essential way from pupils to acquire the content that I delivered to them.

How does technological knowledge help the pedagogy to make the student get the content?

This is clearly seen when I used the PowerPoint slides. I introduced to pupils the form of “Wh-Question” with the assistance of the PowerPoint. Moreover, when I use the slides, the lesson looks more organized and systematic while able to grasp my pupils attention since they are interested in what I am showing them. On the other hand, the task sheets that I distributed too indirectly helps pupils to practice the content that I am teaching. So, by doing this, pupils get to see what they are learning.

As, a whole this is how TPACK was integrated throughout my lesson. I personally feel that TPACK is really essential lesson. Well, that’s all for this week. Feel free to leave your comments.
